These are the core functional morphemes of Mandarin —
the xūcí 虚词 — without which no Chinese sentence works.

They do not carry independent meaning, but provide grammar, structure, and logic.

Top 15 Funktionsbausteine des Chinesischen (= Die wichtigsten Funktionswörter / Funktionsmorpheme, die fast alle chinesischen Sätze strukturieren) Diese 15 Bausteine bilden das Grundgerüst der Grammatik – ohne sie funktioniert kein Satz. Man nennt sie im Chinesischen oft 虚词 xūcí (Funktionswörter), weil sie keine eigene konkrete Bedeutung tragen, sondern grammatische Funktionen erfüllen.

Top 15 Functional Building Blocks of Chinese (= The most important function words/morphemes that structure almost all Chinese sentences) These 15 building blocks form the basic framework of grammar – no sentence works without them. In Chinese, they are often called 虚词 xūcí (function words) because they do not carry their own concrete meaning but fulfill grammatical functions.

1. 的 de

Pinyin: de
HSK: Funktion (Satzvokabular HSK1–2)

Example sentence:

  • EN: This is my friend.

  • DE: Das ist mein Freund.

  • CN: 这是我的朋友。

  • PY: Zhè shì wǒ de péngyou.


2. 得 de

Pinyin: de
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 2–3

Example sentence:

  • EN: He speaks very well.

  • DE: Er spricht sehr gut.

  • CN: 他说得很好。

  • PY: Tā shuō de hěn hǎo.


3. 地 de

Pinyin: de
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 2–3

Example sentence:

  • EN: She writes carefully.

  • DE: Sie schreibt sorgfältig.

  • CN: 她认真地写字。

  • PY: Tā rènzhēn de xiězì.


4. 了 le

Pinyin: le
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 1–2

Example sentence:

  • EN: He has arrived.

  • DE: Er ist angekommen.

  • CN: 他来了。

  • PY: Tā lái le.


5. 过 guo

Pinyin: guo
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 2–3

Example sentence:

  • EN: I have been to Beijing.

  • DE: Ich war schon einmal in Beijing.

  • CN: 我去过北京。

  • PY: Wǒ qù guo Běijīng.


6. 着 zhe

Pinyin: zhe
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 3

Example sentence:

  • EN: The door is open.

  • DE: Die Tür steht offen.

  • CN: 门开着。

  • PY: Mén kāi zhe.


7. 在 zài (as progressive aspect)

Pinyin: zài
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 1–2

Example sentence:

  • EN: I am eating right now.

  • DE: Ich esse gerade.

  • CN: 我在吃饭。

  • PY: Wǒ zài chīfàn.


8. 把 bǎ

Pinyin:
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 3–4

Example sentence:

  • EN: Put the book on the table.

  • DE: Leg das Buch auf den Tisch.

  • CN: 把书放在桌子上。

  • PY: Bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.


9. 被 bèi

Pinyin: bèi
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 3–4

Example sentence:

  • EN: He was scolded.

  • DE: Er wurde geschimpft.

  • CN: 他被骂了。

  • PY: Tā bèi mà le.


10. 给 gěi (benefactive use)

Pinyin: gěi
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK 2–3

Example sentence:

  • EN: Tell it to me again.

  • DE: Sag es mir noch einmal.

  • CN: 给我说一遍。

  • PY: Gěi wǒ shuō yí biàn.


11. 跟 gēn / 和 hé

Pinyin: gēn / hé
HSK: Funktion / Satzvokabular HSK1–2

Example sentence:

  • EN: Come with me.

  • DE: Komm mit mir.

  • CN: 跟我来。

  • PY: Gēn wǒ lái.


12. 对 duì

Pinyin: duì
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK2–3

Example sentence:

  • EN: He is nice to me.

  • DE: Er ist nett zu mir.

  • CN: 他对我很好。

  • PY: Tā duì wǒ hěn hǎo.


13. 在 / 到 / 从

Pinyin: zài / dào / cóng
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK1–2

Example sentences:

  • 在 zài – „at“

    • CN: 我在家。

    • PY: Wǒ zài jiā.

    • EN: I am at home.

    • DE: Ich bin zu Hause.

  • 到 dào – „to“

    • CN: 我到北京。

    • PY: Wǒ dào Běijīng.

    • EN: I am going to Beijing.

    • DE: Ich gehe nach Beijing.

  • 从 cóng – „from“

    • CN: 我从德国来。

    • PY: Wǒ cóng Déguó lái.

    • EN: I come from Germany.

    • DE: Ich komme aus Deutschland.


14. 就 jiù / 才 cái

Pinyin: jiù / cái
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK2–3

Example sentences:

  • 就 jiù — early, already:

    • CN: 他九点就来了。

    • PY: Tā jiǔ diǎn jiù lái le.

    • EN: He arrived already at 9.

    • DE: Er kam schon um 9.

  • 才 cái — late, only then:

    • CN: 他九点才来。

    • PY: Tā jiǔ diǎn cái lái.

    • EN: He arrived only at 9.

    • DE: Er kam erst um 9.


15. 吗 / 呢 / 吧

Pinyin: ma / ne / ba
HSK: Satzvokabular HSK1–2

Example sentences:

  • 吗 ma — question

    • CN: 你好吗?

    • PY: Nǐ hǎo ma?

    • EN: How are you?

    • DE: Wie geht’s dir?

  • 呢 ne — follow-up / “and…?”

    • CN: 他呢?

    • PY: Tā ne?

    • EN: And him?

    • DE: Und er?

  • 吧 ba — suggestion / request

    • CN: 走吧。

    • PY: Zǒu ba.

    • EN: Let’s go.

    • DE: Lass uns gehen.
